Fabulous cricket from the U12 Girls
02 Jun
Maidenhead & Bray hosted the first Berkshire Youth League U12 Girls Festival at Bray on Sunday.
There
are now 8 clubs across Berkshire playing U12 Girls cricket, with the
competition split into 2 regional divisions, East & West Berkshire.
The top 2 teams from each region will go through to play in the finals
day in September.
Maidenhead
& Bray have two teams entered and this first festival saw them play
a round robin tournament against Henley and Finchampstead. Wokingham
are the other club in our East region.
Matches
are played 6 a side, with 9 overs per innings. Girls bat in pairs for 3
overs each. Barrington rules apply and teams start with 200 runs; 5
runs being deducted for each wicket lost.
The first match between Maidenhead & Bray Does and Henley was very exciting, with a very close finish.
Henley scored an impressive 274-1.
The
Does were very close, needing 10 runs to win off the last over. They
got 6 off the first 4 balls. Poppy James then middled a wonderful cover
drive that looked set for the boundary, only for the Henley fielder to
take a remarkable catch., which meant we were deducted 5 runs. Henley
eventually won by 13 runs, taking another wicket off the last ball.
Our Roes lost their first match to Finchampstead.
The Bray ‘derby’ saw the Does comfortable beat the Roes.
Henley beat Finchampstead.
The Roes then had a very close match versus Henley, narrowly losing by 11 runs.
They certainly improved during the festival and were well lead by captain Sophie Lange.
Our
Does really found their form with a fantastic performance against
Finchampstead, winning by 45 runs, scoring 265-3 and restricting
Finchampstead to 220-9, with Poppy putting in a captain’s performance
with 18 runs and 5 wickets.
They just got stronger with each game and will certainly want to continue their progress in the next festival.
Over the 6 matches, Henley came out victors, with 3 wins and Maidenhead & Bray Does 2 wins.
Huw Buckle, commented,
‘’There
was some fantastic all round cricket and it shows just how the sport is
gaining interest amongst girls. It’s brilliant to see so many girls
playing cricket and enjoying it so much. All of our girls were fabulous
with some great batting, bowling and fielding. There were some superb
catches. They also looked brilliant in the new pink shirts.’’
