MBCC U13's Stags Win Julian Cup 2012
10 Sep
The long awaited rearranged Julian Cup Finals day was finally here. We were the defending champions and winning this would be a fitting end to the season. It was a glorious day and who would’ve thought 6 weeks ago we would get a day as perfect as this. Our semi finalists Wargrave had earlier conceded the game and so we headed straight through to the finals playing Cookham Dean, who overcame Marlow in the other semi finals.
My preference would’ve been to bat first and so when we lost the toss it was a relief when Cookham stuck us in. We opened the batting with Ben Ward and Todd but found ourselves in early trouble as Todd was bowled in the second over. This introduced Ben Hooper to the crease who quickly opened his account with a boundary. Both Bens, as they done often for the U13 Stags, began rebuilding the innings. This was a good batting track and for anyone with patience it would pay dividend. Ben H was soon in his stride smashing boundaries and rotating the strike with the Ben W. They put an excellent partnership of 43 taking the score to 52 off 7 overs, a superb recovery, before Ben Hooper retired. Jai was next in but in an unfortunate mix up with Ben W lost his wicket without scoring.
George joined Ben and they both continued piling on the runs. George’s first scoring shot was an exquisite leg glance for 4 which he followed up with two further boundaries. At the half way mark we had reached 73. Ben W continued to play a captains innings before he retired opening the door for Duncan who came and played a few lusty blows before he fell for 10. With 5 overs left Nishil, Kieran and Sean had a flurry of shots taking our total to 144 off 20 overs, this was a big total to defend.
Cookham had to come out guns blazing requiring 7/over and so the first bowling spell would dictate the outcome of the game. Nishil and George were trusted with this and, as has often happened this season, our openers bowled with the accuracy and guile worthy of champions. In their respective first 3 overs Nishil conceded 2 and George 5 limiting Cookham to just 9 off 6 overs – I would say at this stage the game was decided as Cookham found themselves needing a massive 10/over hereon.
Ben Hopper and Kieran were brought into the attack and his 4 over spell Ben picked up 2-14 whereas Kieran took some hits off Cookham’s hard hitting #3, Ben Harris. Jai was introduced to kerb the runs and that’s exactly what he did, removing the dangerous Ben Harris quickly. Jai went to bowl 4 overs, picking up a wicket in his every over finishing with remarkable figures of 4-9.
With Cookham 59-5 off 15 the game was “in the bag” and so it was a perfect opportunity to allow Kartik, Duncan, Sean and Pratyush to turn their arm over. Between them they conceded 12 runs and Pratyush grabbed his first ever wicket for MBCC demonstrating the depth in our bowling squad. With victory in sight Pratyush bowled the final ball with a 7 man slip cordon and there it was ….MBCC had successfully defended the trophy restricting Cookham to 75. This was a fantastic win with all players putting in an all round batting, bowling and fielding performance.
In addition to winning the trophy, two individuals picked up awards -- Jai was named Man of the Match and Kieran Grey was awarded the Player of the Season for his 6 wicket in an over spell at Taplow – well done to both.
And there it was the perfect end to the 2012 season where U13s Stags won 4/5 of all the competitions it had entered, a truly fantastic season, well done to all the colts involved.
